Penn-Union Insulated Piercing Connectors Now Service Rated For Compliance With NEC 230

We are excited to announce that Penn-Union’s Insulated Piercing Connectors (IPC) have achieved a significant milestone: they are now service rated and fully compliant with the latest National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 230 requirements.

What does this mean for you?

Beginning January 1, 2023, NEC updates mandated that all connectors and splices installed on service conductors must comply with stringent new standards. Our IPCs have been rigorously tested and evaluated against the NEMA / ANSI C119.5 requirements, as outlined in Annex H of the UL486A-486B standard. This ensures that Penn-Union’s IPCs meet the highest industry standards for use on service conductors, bringing them into full compliance with NEC 230.46 codes.

A formal letter from Bob Bolmanski, Penn-Union’s Director of Engineering, further details this compliance and the testing procedures. We are proud to offer a product that meets these critical standards, reaffirming our commitment to safety, quality, and innovation.

Where Are Penn-Union Insulated Piercing Connectors Typically Used?

Penn-Union’s IPCs are versatile, making them ideal for a wide range of applications across various industries:

Renewable Energy Systems
In solar and wind energy systems, IPCs are used to establish reliable connections between conductors within arrays or between arrays and junction boxes. Their design supports rapid installation and modifications, which is crucial for large-scale or modular renewable projects. Whether you’re setting up solar panels or wind turbines, our IPCs offer the efficiency and flexibility required for today’s evolving energy landscape.

Utility Applications
Utility companies rely on IPCs for connecting secondary service drops to low- and medium-voltage power distribution lines. The ability to make quick and secure taps without removing the insulation from the main conductor streamlines service connections and repairs, minimizing disruption and downtime for end-users.

Street Lighting and Outdoor Applications
Our IPCs are designed to withstand the harsh conditions often found in outdoor environments. They provide safe, rapid connections for street lighting installations, ensuring reliable performance even in extreme weather. Their resistance to environmental elements makes them a durable choice for various outdoor electrical projects.

Temporary Power Solutions
Construction sites and other temporary power setups demand flexibility and ease of use. IPCs offer a practical solution in these scenarios, enabling quick connections that can be easily adjusted or disconnected as needed. Their robust construction and reliable performance make them a trusted choice for temporary power applications.
